Short stories

  • The Conqueror

    We are a pitiable people.

Some nations boast great kings. Others have well-trained armies to defend them. We have survived because we are not worth the trouble of invasion.

  • Avery's Crisis

She’s just off the red carpet when Carrie Elwood comes over.

“Brenna, hi!” she says. “So nice to finally meet you in person.”

“Nice to meet you, too,” Brenna says, even though it isn’t.

  • The Ghost-Scrap

I was summoned to Fernsby’s quarters far too early for my taste. The man spends half the night awake and is up again early as a farmer — yet another proof of his abnormal existence.

  • Curlew

Curlew stands to greet you when you enter the little room. The old-fashioned gesture surprises you. It’s the kind of thing that happens in movies, or only to other women, like grand romantic gestures or marriage proposals.
